Betty was born in Pendleton, Oregon, on Jan. 24, 1929, to parents Lloyd and Elva (Snyder) Peterson. Betty died on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023, in Pendleton.
Betty was married to Cecil S. Holmes and they had seven children.
Betty was Pendleton's Woman of the Year in 2001. She was praised for her efforts in 12 different areas of service, which included her participation in school activities, the election board, the Pendleton Round-Up, Tonya's House, the American Red Cross, the Umatilla County Historical Society, the Community Bargain Center and the Children's Museum of Eastern Oregon.
She also served her church as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. She shared her willingness to use her talents in sign language to benefit others both in social and legal situations.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Dawn (Steve) Bookout, Moneta (Dan) Woollard, Cheri (Ed) Aubert, Teresa (Dennis) Fine, Shelly Holmes and Sarah (Dave) Chappel; son, Rick Holmes; and six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and many, many relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cecil; a brother, Don Webb; and a son-in-law, Ed Aubert.
