Gilberta Gene (Horn) Lieuallen
May 14, 1940--December 8, 2022
Gilberta Gene (Horn) Lieuallen passed away at her home on Dec. 8, 2022. She was born May 14, 1940, to Wilbert Grant Horn and Emma Elizabeth (Johnson) Horn.
Gilberta was raised on the family ranch on Stewart Creek east of Pilot Rock. She attended Pilot Rock schools where she was active in 4-H, band and was a baton twirler. Transferring to Pendleton High School as a sophomore, she graduated in 1958.
The next step in her educational process was to enroll at Oregon State College where she attained her degree in education. Her connection with Oregon State was firm. Her brother and one sister also attended OSU as did three of her children. She attended Mother's Weekend at OSU for nine consecutive years. She was proud of having won a cow milking competition while on the OSU campus.
After graduation, she taught school in La Center, Washington, for a year. Then she returned to Pendleton where she became the office manager for the Kerns Company. Gilberta married Don Lieuallen in 1968 and moved to Adams.
She became active in the Adams Ladies Club, DAR, Wildhorse Grange, Triangle Little League and the Community Church. In 2011, she became the Honored Queen for the Weston Pioneer Reunion. For many years, she served as recorder for the city of Adams.
She was creative, making Raggedy Ann dolls, quilting, tapestry wall hangings and crocheting afghans. She edited a series of book on Adams history, relying on research from the archives of the East Oregonian. She spent time on Genealogy research.
She was proud of her Swedish ancestry and enjoyed a trip to Sweden. She traveled extensively in the western part of the United States and made one excursion to Connecticut, Washington, D.C. and colonial Williamsburg. There was also one trip to Hawaii and a cruise to Alaska.
For several years, she was involved in multiple whitewater rafting trips on rivers in Oregon and Idaho. A favorite recreation was attending sporting events in which her children and grandchildren were participants.
Survivors include her husband, children, Pete Sederburg (Jan) of Richland, Washington; Eric Sederbur and Tom Lieuallen (Kira) of Adams; and Karen Lieuallen of Tucson, Arizona; sister, Petra Harvey of Sacramento, California; and brother, Ladd Horn of Island City, Oregon. Brother Leonard Horn, and sister Tylene Schmidt, died earlier. There are 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Contributions to her memory can be made to the Adams Community Church, P.O. Box 34, Adams, OR 97810, or the Umatilla County Historical Society, P.O. Box 253, Pendleton, OR 97801.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. at Pendleton Pioneer Chapel, 131 S.E. Byers Ave., Pendleton, Oregon.
