Gladys Teresia Burleson Mendenhall
March 13, 1921--March 17, 2023
Gladys Teresia Burleson Mendenhall was born in Max, Missouri, on March 13, 1921. As a young child, she moved to Illinois with her four brothers and parents to their family farm where they produced maple syrup and raised livestock.
After her mother had her first hear attack, when Gladys was only 10 years old, she was put in charge of cooking for the harvest crew while her mother recovered. Even at a young age, she didn't shy away from hard work and it served her well throughout her life. Gladys attended beauty school after graduating and then went on to business school which led to being a manager at Krogers.
In 1943, Gladys met Floyd Mendenhall while working at a war manufacturing facility in Decatur, Illinois. They were married in 1944. In 1946, Floyd and Gladys moved out west to Portland where their daughter, Sherry, was born. Shortly thereafter, they settled in Pendleton, Oregon.
Floyd was hired as a sheriff deputy for Umatilla County and Gladys at the tax department. Gladys was deputized by the sheriff's department to assist with transporting prisoners and other various tasks.
In 1968, Floyd suffered a massive heart attack and Gladys became his full-time caregiver, until his death in 1997. During this time and continuing until recently, Gladys continued to be active with the Catholic church and community.
Oh what an amazing life Gladys lived. A life full of hard work, fun and many adventures. Gladys and Floyd inspired their family and friends with their deep love, respect and dedication to each other.
Gladys was well known for her outstanding cooking and baking skills that was only surpassed by her kind and helpful heart. Glady's biggest pride and joy was her family and friends she considered family.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, her husband, Floyd; stepson, Wesley Mendenhall; and great-grandson, Cash Troyer.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Frazier (Tom); daughter-in-law, Kay Mendenhall; grandchildren, Annette Hansen (Phil), Alan Mendenhall, Toiresa Frazier and Tyler Frazier; great-grandchildren, Remington Troyer, Karrington Troyer, Jace Frazier and Ashtyn Frazier; and great-great-grandbabies, Teeson and Indi Simmons.
