Obituary

Luther Ellis, son of Gideon and Mehitable (Wiley) Ellis, died April 17. He was born in Roxbury, Sept 25, 1825, went to Indianapolis, Ind., in 1854 and from there to Iowa where he remained until 1895; then went to Pendleton, Oregon, where he died as stated above. Early in life he became a member of the Freewill Baptist church and was a member of that denomination for nearly 50 years, often supplying in the pulpit in the absence of the minister. He was married three times, first to Miss Sarah Loomis, daughter of Jacob Loomis of this town; she died at Vinton, Iowa in 1856. In 1857 he married Miss Mary A Williams; she died in 1891; in 1892 he married Mrs. Mary A. Logan, who survives him. He enlisted in Co. C, 32d Reg., Iowa volunteers in 1862. His regiment was on duty for sometime in the Mississippi Valley, afterwards in Kentucky and Tennessee and finally went to Louisiana, where he joined the expedition up Red River and took part in the battle of Pleasant Hill, where one half of his company was either killed or wounded. His company was mustered out of service in August 1865 when he went home, "a happy man." He leaves besides a widow, one brother Farenzo Ellis of Bethel.
